Program Rules and Regulations
Interns are required to obey all federal, state, and local laws. Additionally, strict adherence to the following rules must be followed. Violation of these rules may be cause for removal from the internship program.
Sheriff's Office policies and procedures: Interns must follow all Sheriffs Office policies and procedures as outlined at the beginning of the internship. These include but are not limited to: sexual and other harassment, KCJIS requirements and dissemination of criminal history information, computer use, and standards of conduct.
Compensation: High School Interns are not compensated or granted benefits. Hours spent during the internship will be recorded for attendance purposes and course credit. College Interns will receive $21.00/hour for the duration of their 8 week program with a 40-hour work week schedule.
Safety: Interns must be institutionally aware and conduct themselves in a safe manner at all times. Unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and all injuries must be reported immediately to a supervisor and, as soon as possible, to the Personnel Division Sergeant (913-715-5520).
Ride-Alongs: Interns are eligible to ride along with deputies but must abide by the procedure outlined in the section of this document titled "Internship Special Considerations."
Confidentiality: Interns shall treat the office business of the agency as confidential and shall not disseminate information regarding agency business or operations unless expressly permitted by supervisory staff.
Outside assignments: Interns may only prepare documents about their observation or experiences for the internship program and their college or high school requirements, with a copy of each provided to the Personnel Division Internship Coordinator(s) (Master Deputy Hutcheson - college or Deputy Paez- high school).
Weapons: Interns are prohibited from carrying weapons or handcuffs of any type.
Enforcement action: Interns are prohibited from taking any type of enforcement action. Interns shall not at any time represent themselves as sworn officers.
I.D. Badges: Interns must have their building access/identification card clearly displayed when entering the building and during scheduled work hours (except when impractical or detrimental to the progress of criminal investigations). Lost or stolen I.D. badges must be immediately reported to a supervisor and the Personnel Division Sergeant. Interns are required to return I.D. badges at the completion of the program.
Conduct: Interns shall not at any time engage in unbecoming conduct, which tends to discredit the Sheriffs Office or the school they are affiliated with. This includes posts or submissions to social media. Photographs of agency operations are prohibited unless specifically authorized by a supervisor. Use of electronic devices or cell phones is prohibited unless approved by a supervisor.
Driving of Agency Vehicles: Interns shall not drive agency vehicles. Interns shall wear seat belts when riding in an agency vehicle.
Courtesy: Interns shall not use profane or intentionally insulting or degrading language or act in such a manner towards any member of the agency or to any citizen. Interns shall be courteous and tactful in the performance of their duties and shall promptly respond to all reasonable requests for assistance. Interns shall refer to sworn staff members by their appropriate rank and last name.
Punctuality and Attendance: Interns are required to punctually report for their assigned duties. Time off during the internship shall be coordinated with the Personnel Division Internship Coordinator(s) at least three days in advance. In the event an illness or emergency prevents attendance, contact the supervisor in your assigned unit and the Personnel Division Internship Coordinator(s) prior to the designated shift.
Appearance: Interns representing the Sheriffs Office shall maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance, with attire and footwear that is appropriate for an office work environment (agency issued uniform). Supervisors may allow adjustments to this rule for certain work situations when appropriate. Agency policies concerning civilian employees will be the standard for Interns.
Absolutely NO: sandals, flip-flops, shorts, cut-offs, t-shirts, tank tops or
clothing with offensive wording, logos, or images.
Schedules: All Interns shall receive a schedule indicating their assigned units and hours.
Grade/Monitoring: The Intern will be assessed on attendance at duty assignments and proficiency of any tasks assigned. If your teacher/professor has a specific requirement, please advise your JCSO Intern Coordinator.
Violations of any rules: Interns who violate these rules or any agency policy will be subject to sanctions, including and up to the removal from the Internship Program.
I have read all rules, policies, and procedures provided to me and agree to follow all rules, policies and procedures. I have been given the opportunity to ask questions about any rule, policy, or procedure. I also understand failure to follow any rule, policy, or procedure could result in any sanction, up to and including removal from the internship program with an unsatisfactory grade reported to my professor and/or other school staff.
