Per K.S.A. 65-2426a, “no dead body, as defined in K.S.A. 65-2401, and amendments thereto, shall be cremated unless a coroner’s permit to cremate has been executed to authorize such cremation, if the death or cause of death occurred within the state of Kansas or in a state where such permit to cremate is required” (emphasis added).

Since Johnson County is along the state line with Missouri, individuals with a cause of death, such as an injury, that occurred in Kansas may occasionally pass away in Missouri. The death certificates for these individuals will be completed on the Missouri electronic death record system, MoEVR, as that is the state where death occurred. MoEVR does not allow for online cremation permit completion, as cremation permits are not required for Missouri deaths. However, since the cause of death occurred in Kansas, a Kansas cremation permit is required for such individuals. For all deaths that occur in Kansas, the cremation permit will be signed within the online KS death certification program VRV. Please call the MEO at 913-826-3510 if a permit is needed separate from VRV with the reason for the request.

Funeral home directors: For the above situations where the cause of death occurred in Kansas but the death occurred out of state, or if a permit is needed separate from VRV, please complete this online cremation permit. The form will be submitted for the Medical Examiner/Coroner signature and returned to your provided fax number or email.

1. A dead body cannot be cremated without this permit. This pertains to any deceased being cremated in the State of Kansas.
2. The funeral director is to obtain permission to cremate from a coroner. In cases of an out-of-state death, permission may be obtained from a Kansas coroner if the body has been released to a Kansas funeral home or crematory.
3. In the case of out-of-state disposition, this permit must be attached to the Out-of-State Transit Permit that accompanies the body out of state.
4. In the case of out-of-state disposition, the Kansas license funeral director shall not issue an Out-of-State Transit Permit when the body is to be cremated unless the funeral director has obtained the Coroner's Permit to Cremate a Dead Body along with a complete and satisfactory Certificate of Death.
5. The Coroner's Permit to Cremate a Dead Body shall be retained by the crematory and is subject to examination at any time by any coroner or representative of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
